I have been teaching IELTS for many years. People often go to the exam without any preparation in an effort to save money, but, in the long run, it actually becomes more expensive and time-consuming, because poorly or improperly prepared students very often end up having to retake the exam, sometimes numerous times, with each retest increasing their total cost.
Many candidates take a quick look at the test online and mistakenly conclude that they can manage it by themselves. However, most candidates are likely to attain better results in the reading, listening, and speaking portions with the assistance of a qualified and experienced instructor, and particularly in the written portion, where, because of very rigorous, demanding, and highly specific criteria that are required, it is virtually impossible to succeed without help from a knowledgeable instructor.
